As an organization we specialize in providing free legal services to pre-trial detainees who have been unjustly imprisoned, suffered human rights abuse by government officials and those who have been imprisoned because of a misdemeanour (petty offences e.g hawking food) and we believe deserve a second chance.
FMP has ambitions to reach out to as many pre-trial prisoners as possible as there is an epidemic of pre-trial detainees all over prisons in Nigeria. FMP is dedicated to filling the void. We currently have legal practitioners and legal administrators who are successfully running our branch in Ilorin, Kwara State, North Central Nigeria.
We aim to influence the three arms of government in their policies and decision making process in relation to human rights violation in Nigeria.
Free My People Legal and Human Rights Initiative was founded in 2013 by Adedoyin Odumosu-Adeniran, a lawyer who is concerned about the level of Human Rights abuse in Nigeria in particular, innocent prisoners otherwise known as awaiting trial detainees. Established as a legal charity, its primary objective is to advocate and create awareness on human rights abuse issues through every platform possible, and more importantly to free innocent pre-trial detainees(PTD).
To this day, our vision and values reflect that we remain essentially an organisation dedicated to fighting against the unjust and illegal detention of innocent members of our society, supporting them after their release through rehabilitation and therapy when necessary.
Adedoyin Odumosu-Adeniran a staunch advocate for prison reform and human rights, established FMP just before graduating from Law School.
"The criminal justice system in Nigeria is one of the worst in the world. Though, she is blind to race, sex, religion and ethnicity, she is however not blind to poverty!
My passion for human rights led me on this journey, we have started very small, but the organisations dream of being present in at least six geo-political zones in Nigeria will surely come to pass."
Aminu Mohammed primarily guides the organisation on its mode of operation and administration.
Aminu specializes in building relationships with the various prisons all over Kwara State to ensure we are supporting the right inmates.
"We have established an organisation with an excellent reputation for enforcement of human rights and promoting equality and fairness before the law."
Idris Ahmad Orisankoko is a trained sociologist and lawyer who is passionate about the issues affecting the criminal justice system and its impact on society, especially in Nigeria.
"I want to see advanced changes in our criminal justice system. A kind of change where your level of poverty will not determine your level of justice."
